Why more men than women are dying from Covid-19

In every single country affected by Covid-19 around the world, men make up most of the percentage of dead people. This trend started in China where over 70% of the people dying from the virus were men. The main theory in China was that since about 50% of men in the country smoke and only 2% of women, smoking was the leading cause to this difference in gender mortality.

Definitively people in China smoke a lot more than in other countries like for example the USA or Germany. However, in these countries, men are still leading the death toll compared to women. This has led many people to say that this is caused also because men are less careful than women and don't take care of themselves that much. This is based on an old stereotype about men which exists not only in the media but in our communities in general. In terms of health men are normally portrayed as more layed back, and there is an idea that they don't like going to the doctor or checking up every once in a while.

This is an example of a stereotype that this coronavirus has helped grow and that has been portrayed in the media at the same time. However this is not a moment in which the media or anyone should be focusing on who is more responsible for this virus, but rather informing people on what to do to prevent it and also teaching how to cope with isolation and stress.
